The story of Kary Parsons delivering her baby in jail while shackled and alone in a cell intensely resonated with me. The shackling of pregnant women is banned by treaty and international law but not in Maryland where this took place. To deny assistance to a woman in labor is so archaic a violation that this case stands out as concerning all women and men. The raw emotions expressed by this print are meant to mirror those of women who are helpless to control their bodies and their place in the world and says more than any words can communicate.
