In my work I use symbols of silence to address the tired cultural campaign to curb and undermine the feminine voice and agenda. Like many women, I always felt asphyxiated by the unjust and relentless minimization inflicted upon the ‘weaker’ sex. The Bride of Diaphanous addresses our culture’s continued commitment to keeping women quiet and in a state of subordination. My art is a protest of intolerance for dismissal in any way, but particularly when it comes to gender. This has left humanity living tragically below its potential.
Laura Gelsomini is a published figurative artist/ illustrator and has spent her professional career as an instructor of two-dimensional media art in higher education. She holds a BA in Studio Art from the State University of New York and an MFA in Painting from Marywood University.
Gelsomini’s work has been exhibited at Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, New York City. Her work was also included in Fuck You, In The Most Loving Way, a 2017 feminist homage exhibit to 1972’s classic work, Womanhouse. She has worked in collaboration with fellow artist, Susan Duby, on a large body of work that focuses on women from the perspective of both artist and subject. Gelsomini and Duby use each other’s images interchangeably, parodying expectations of female figures in art and grappling with other biased cultural implementations that continue to be prescribed for women in general.
