He just walked out after thirty-seven years of marriage, two grown children, grandchildren, multiple moves, jobs, etc. He left me and our life together to make a new one for himself saying it was all a mistake. But we lived the life we agreed to. I stayed home to raise our (adopted) kids. I kept him sane for thirty years but, no, it was not enough.
Creating Words of Rage was akin to testifying. Speaking up about my experiences in this way made a difference to me as I hope it will for many others.
Jo-Ann Brody is a figurative sculptor who works in clay, cement, and papier mache. Her work is focused on the female body image and woman’s themes. She has exhibited at Hudson Valley MOCA, Peekskill NY; Ceres Gallery, NYC; The Arts Exchange, ArtsWestchester, White Plains NY; Aldo Castillo Gallery, Chicago IL; and Network Nishijin and Gallery Zogei, Kyoto, Japan. Her book work was included in Jewish Women Jewish Themes which traveled extensively throughout the US.
Awards: SOS Grant, NYFA, Hudson Valley Region, 2008, 2000. Artist residency/exchange between Network Nishijin (Kyoto), and Peekskill, NY, 2 month residency.
Brody teaches extensively through Young Audiences NY working in the classrooms of NYC with children. She runs an art camp in Peekskill, NY and worked with the Clay Arts Center, Portchester NY; Peekskill Clay Studios, Peekskill, NY; Westchester Community College, White Plains, NY; and Arts Westchester.
