Sometimes paintings start with an image – in this case derived from the bird woman in Russian folk art. Birds and women are linked in peoples’ minds – birds are wild and free. They fly and sing. They are also prey. They will sing even in a cage. But they screech too and though one can own a bird, one cannot shut it up.
According to philosopher Mark Blum (in Cognition and Temporality), Audrey Ushenko, “. . . . as a dialectical quantum thinker, can show us new inter-connected forms of us and others that widen our comprehension of community.” In non-philosopher speak, Ushenko is a narrative painter focusing on the communal rather than the hostile side of human interaction. Through work that is illusionistic with a fantasy element, she pushes the boundaries of real space and real experience. Ushenko does public projects sometimes executing a painting on site with the help of onlookers who can appear in the painting. She also paints still lifes, landscapes and animals.
