The pieces in this series reference flowers, women's lips, female energy, and gender politics. Each one is a "snapshot" of a woman's reaction to sexism, injustice, and/or abuse. Together they form an album of responses: don’t bristle silently, don’t swallow a bitter pill, don’t self-censor, don’t hold back. Each cut paper relief incorporates found materials such as zippers, buttons, nuts and bolts, staples, fabric and rope. Handmade photo corners set off each piece.
Augmenting the physical work is my desire to reveal female beauty and women's strength and to question the internal and external conditions that nurture women's expression.
New York artist, Barbara Lubliner, moves fluidly from performance art to works on paper, to sculpture, both large and small. She transforms traditional and nontraditional materials into expressions that are both iconic and quirky. Her art practice is a confluence of art and life, each twist and turn driven by the desire to use current life concerns as the springboard for insightful art. Much of Lubliner’s work focuses on her experience of being a woman. Solo exhibitions include the Gibson Gallery Museum at SUNY Potsdam; Carter Burden Gallery, NYC; Drawing Rooms, Jersey City, NJ; and Pierro Gallery, South Orange, NJ. Recent group exhibitions include City Reliquary Museum, NYC; Islip Art Museum, East Islip, NY; Edison Price Lighting Gallery, L.I.C., NY; and Ceres Gallery, NYC. Performance venues include the Brooklyn Museum and the Après Avant Garde Festival on the Staten Island Ferry.
